"If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this course please contact your local support service for help, information and support.'

International Development work, just like any other sector that has direct contact with and responsibility for children, is not immune to the dangers of child abuse. A number of scandals, which have come to light in recent years, have shown this all too clearly. Without proper safeguarding measures, the potential for harm to children and damage to the ongoing work of organisations cannot be underestimated or over-stated.

This introductory course is divided into two parts: 'Why Child Safeguarding?' and 'How to implement Child Safeguarding measures.' These materials are designed to provide clear and practical explanations of what child safeguarding is, and how child safeguarding can be put into practice in your everyday work.

Part One – Why Child Safeguarding?

Introduction

The first half of the course looks at the reasons why child safeguarding is so necessary and important.

The exercises are devised to enable you to explore and think about the practical implications of child safeguarding for you and your organisation. When doing the exercises we ask you to be as honest as possible about your own, as well as your organisation's attitudes and behaviours towards children.

After completing this course we encourage you to check the child safeguarding 'health' of your organisation through the online 'Organisation Self Audit Tool' which is also available free of charge on this website.
